On Saturday night, October 13, the Southern State Street Rodders will celebrate their 50th anniversary, joining a handful of other South Australian clubs in reaching this magic number.
First formed as the Southern State Rod and Drag Team, a reflection of its drag racing roots, the club changed its name to Southern State Street Rodders around 1974. Graham Watson (‘Misty’ T-Bucket) is credited as a founding member, although Trevor Slarks is recognised as the club’s longest continually serving member to date. Most South Australia-based enthusiasts would best kniow the club as host of the annual Hot Rods and Classics Picnic, an event which began as a small Christmas cruise and has evolved into a major gathering on Adelaide’s hot rodding calendar.
Whilst the club’s membership is limited to and remains at 40, all past members and friends in the hot rod fraternity are welcomed in celebrating their birthday on October 13 at the Cruising Yacht Club in North Haven. $45 will get you a full buffet meal with dessert bar, live music, a light hearted history lesson and a plenty of laughs!
