My father worked as a head accountant at Ampol Petroleum based in Balmain, Sydney. He was instrumental in establishing many of Sydney’s earliest hot rod shows, by assisting Romans club members and other young hot rodders who wanted to advance this often frowned upon hobby.
The hot rod show at Balgowlah in 1965, all of the shows at Roselands and Bankstown and the earliest Warrawong events, as well as shows in Orange and Canberra enjoyed a lot of support from the newspapers and the NSW police because of his influence, and he did it all on an honorary basis.
His efforts are still acknowledged today by the Austin Arrowsmith Elegance Award, presented to an outstanding vehicle at the annual Hot Rod and Custom Auto Expo in Sydney.
