The ’34 is based on one of Rod Bods by Elvis body and chassis packages, the body featuring the standard three inch chop and optional two inch widened rear guards. There is one special feature with the addition of the V-shaped swage around the door handles. “I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while,” said Elvis, “and I thought this would be a good opportunity. It makes the car just a little bit unique.”
Made You Look Kustoms helped negotiate with Du Pont who came up with the paint, a shade titled Voodoo Blue. It graces both the exterior panels and the undercarriage as well. “We probably went a bit far with the paint,” said Elvis. “We put a lot of extra time into it, especially underneath where it’s better than it needs to be, but the boys here take a lot of pride in their work and it’s something we wanted to do.”
The grille is a reproduction piece from Hadfields Hot Rods. It’s based on a Rod Bods fibreglass shell and fitted with stainless steel bars, fully TIG welded for durability. Behind it is an Aussie Desert Cooler radiator. Coffs Harbour Exchange Bumper Service put a lick of chrome onto the windscreen frame while Armadale Auto Parts in WA supplied the Autoloc 7” Quartz Halogen headlights. The wiper kit is from Timic Hot Rod Supplies and it all works thanks to a wiring kit from Aussie Auto Loom.
The chassis is based on a reproduction Lilow frame rail and boxing kit which is made right here in Australia. “I think it’s important to support local manufacturing where you can,” he adds. Another prominent Aussie-made feature is the independent front suspension from Rod Tech. “This car was built to drive and it drives really, really well,” said Elvis after obtaining a permit and taking the car on a lengthy shake down run. “I have no doubt you could drive this car from Sydney to Brisbane and get out as fresh as you got in.” The independent suspension does make the car sit a little higher in the front end but there is still room to drop it at the risk of compromising the ride.
Under the louvered hood is a new Chev 350 crate engine, backed with a freshened turbo 350 auto and a nine inch from John Taverna, who supplies most of Rod Bods’ narrowed rear ends. American Republic came up with a set of 15x5 and 15x8 Greg Weld Prolite wheels while Bear’s Tyre, Brake and Mechanical in Tuncurry helped out with the Maxxis 275 and 185 rubber. Get Boosted provided a new booster and dual master cylinder to complete the disc/drum combination braking system and Taree Mufflers and Exhaust came up with a pair of stainless steel mufflers to suit the twin system fabricated by Rod Bods.
Inside is all class thanks to the caramel Leatherette used throughout by Trik Trim in Forster. Coates Hot Rods helped out with the billet steering column and the seat is a Glide Engineering product. “There are others to thank,” said Elvis. “Oz Rods, Henry’s Rod Parts and TCR Carponents all helped out with the supply of various components.” |
